Through out the course of history, governments have sought to ban certain products for the general good of the public. These restrictions can range from limited usage to an across the board suppression of the commodity. Prohibition was one of the more famous failures of government intervention.

A ban on alcoholic beverages in both consumption and manufacture was put in place with the Eighteenth Amendment in 1919. Three main factors led to its eventual repeal. The first was that exemptions were provided. Exceptions are the crack in any foundation. People simply found ways around the law by citing religious and medical uses.This{{/tag} helps explain it more.

Enforcement was underfunded. Too few federal agents were designated to police this act. Local governments and police agencies had little interest using their own resources to enforce this policy.

Finally alcohol is not just a product but part of many heritages. The role of beer and wine among many ethnic groups goes beyond satisfying thirst. People resented this restriction on who they are as a culture. These three reasons were part of a driving force that made Prohibition ineffective and doomed it as a failure of government policy.

George Washington is known for crossing the Delaware and leading the United States to victory in the American Revolution, but he also pioneered several successful agricultural enterprises, one of the most successful of which was his whiskey distillery at his home at Mount Vernon.

In 1797, Washington’s farm manager, the Scotsman James Anderson, convinced Washington to build the distillery. By 1799, it was producing over 11,000 gallons of whiskey annually for domestic use and for export. The distillery was a two story building, comprised of the distillery itself, an office, a storage cellar, and living quarters for the workers.Confused? Here ‘s a little help .

Today, the distillery at Mount Vernon has been restored and is the only distillery producing whiskey just as it was made in the late eighteenth century. Comprised of 60% barley, 35% corn, and 5% malted barley, the distillery still uses Washington’s original mash bill to produce the liquor in a period boiler and copper pot. At this time, the second floor has been converted to a museum that explains the historical process of making whiskey and the role of spirits in funding the American Revolution. You can buy limited quantities of the distillery’s whiskey at The Shops at Mount Vernon if you’d like to taste a bit of the spirits of history.

Our country has saluted cocktails as early as the sixteenth century. We admire them on old movies and respect them in our bars. A deliciously made cocktail is a welcome atribute to a relaxing fun filled evening bound with good friends and conversation.

If you have been lucky enough to sip a Mojito you know that the magic takes place with White Rum, Carbonated Water, sugar and fresh Mint leaves softly processed with a Pestle. The Mojito is thought to be the very first cocktail invented in the sixteenth century.Didn’t catch that? < a href=’http://news.health.com/2012/08/24/recipe-of-the-day-mint-mojito/’>This explains it. Cocktail Artists have since added several different flavors to the Mojito.

A recipe straight out of Singapore lends the Singapore Sling which made it’s debut in the early nineteen hundreds. A concoction of Gin, Benedictine, Cherry flavored Brandy and a tad of Bitters.

A good russian Vodka primiers in the famous White Russian cocktail. Vodka, Kaluha and a splash of cream make this cocktail a sweet treat. This creamy cocktail has been around for about eighty years.

The ideal food marriage to a cocktail is a food that can be eaten without silverware using ones fingers and small enough to take as a whole bite. Some ideal foods include a new take on Pigs In The Blanket; wrap some dry imported salami with a slice of imported cheese bake until brown and serve with some spiced mustard for dipping. Homemade Pita Chips with a freshly made Gucamoli is sure to please. Jumbo Cocktail Shrimp served with a zesty dip is a for sure hit.

Many states in our nation today still have what are called, “Blue laws”. What is a blue law you might ask? A law from Colonial times prohibiting certain activities such as purchasing alcohol on a Sunday. These were strict religious laws and strictly enforced. Today many of these laws are considered obsolete, yet many of them still remain on the books. A few examples.

Alabama

It is illegal to have beer bottles larger than 16 ounces. Furthermore, there are to be no wine labels with naked ladies or immodest pictures.

Alaska

No alcohol is allowed to be sold between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Colorado

It is illegal to ride a horse when you’re intoxicated.

Florida

Throwing a booze party during a hurricane is against the law.

Georgia

It’s okay to drink in public but public drunkenness is prohibited.

Massachusetts

There are no happy hours allowed in bars and taverns.

Oklahoma

Stores must sell alcoholic drinks at room temperature.

South Carolina

There are to be no liquor sales on election day.

Texas

Anyone under the age of 21 can drink if they’re with their parents or their spouse but there are absolutely no liquor or alcohol sales allowed on Sunday’s.

Beer, glorious beer! Loved the world over, and loved slightly more in some places than others. You may be surprised to find which countries consume the most beer. Here is a breakdown of the top three beer consuming countries in the world, taking into consideration the total volume of beer consumed in each country.

1. China consumed the most beer in 2010 by scoffing a total of 44,683 thousand kiloliters. The Chinese favor lagers, and there are many regional Chinese breweries producing this type. Although this country consumes the most beer in volume, it only equals to about 1.2 bottles per person per week because of the very large Chinese population.

2. At 24,138 thousand kiloliters, the United States comes in second. Americans average about 4.4 bottles per person per week, and enjoy American light lager as the most popular beer there. Recently, craft beers have become popular as Americans look for different tastes and textures in their brews.

3. Brazil consumes roughly 12,170 thousand kiloliters per year. Brazilians favor cold draft pilsner types of beer, although lagers are also popular. They prefer their beer ice cold, and drink about 2.6 bottles of beer per person, per week.

There is no set period when what we have come to know as “happy hour” really began. As a general term it means a period where friends or colleagues could gather together for a drink. The oldest reference to this time is found in the nineteen twenties as a reference to the times when Navy ships would hold scheduled events as a way of entertaining the sailors on board. This scheduled entertainment did not revolve around drinking alcoholic beverages. The next inference occurs during the forties just after prohibition went into effect.

People of this time period were accustomed to having a drink after work or before they sat down to dinner. When alcohol was no longer permitted as a social beverage, home consumption ceased being an option. People who wanted to have a drink would gather in what were called speakeasy establishments where they could have a discreet drink with their friends. This is what eventually grew into the time period in modern bars and clubs now referred to as happy hour. Although the term specifically indicates only an hour allocated for drinking, happy hour usually lasts for several hours usually falling between the times of four and ten pm.

Cocktails have always had a certain mystique to them, whipped up behind the bar by experts that mix secret ingredients in their drinks for extra flavor and flair. Recently a new trend has emerged in the cocktail world, one that combines food and flavorings into the drink, creating gourmet cocktails.

Cocktails have been around forever, but throughout time a few favorites have stood the test of time. Margaritas are a perfect example. The are hundreds of recipes for the perfect margarita with multiple ingredients that can be used to create one that is truly unique.Didn’t catch that? This explains it. Older cocktails such as the Gin Rickey, Manhattan and the Rob Roy have made recent comebacks in popularity.

Rum, tequila, vodka, bourbon and gin can all be added to a variety of mixers such as fruit juices, club soda, pop, or tonic in order to create popular cocktails. Fruit slices, sugar, spices and herbs are also used frequently to add flavor. Drinks can be served on the rocks, which is with ice, or frozen, served in crushed ice. Alcoholic beverages can also be served straight up with no ice or neat, which is also served without ice but is served in an old fashioned glass.
